IAM is one of the oldest NGOs in Afghanistan. IAM established the NOOR (National Organization for Ophthalmic Rehabilitation) Eye Care Programme in 1966 with the goal of providing high quality and affordable access to eye care to the people of Afghanistan.

Job Descriptions:

Key responsibilities:

Nursing:

  • At all times when on duty, wear the hospital uniform provided. Staff are responsible to keep their uniforms clean and repaired.
  • Remain in the ward work area each workday until relieved by the night duty nurse or technician.
  • Communicate patient information to other staff via report to nurse or technician coming on duty, and via daily physician ward rounds.
  • Oversee the care of each patient in a respectful manner, including the proper handling of patient cards and paperwork.            
  • Give proper pre-operative, post-operative, and discharge instructions to each patient and family members, and ensure their understanding.
  • Ensure that patients arrive at necessary locations (e.g. operating room, out-patient examination area) in a timely fashion.
  • Understand and be prepared to address the possible medical complications (e.g. hypertension, fever, pneumonia, diarrhea) and post-surgical complications (e.g. hemorrhage, respiratory arrest, pneumonia, urinary retention) of each patient.
  • Follow standard daily routines
  • Oversee dressing rounds.
  • Carry out prescribed medication and other treatment regimens for each patient, including the routine pre-operative preparation of surgical patients.
  • Check and re -stock general dressing and bedside medication trays.
  • Ensure the autoclave sterilization of necessary instruments and equipment.
  • Ensure maintenance of adequate documentation on bedside and nursing station records.
  • Ensure each patient receives adequate fluid and nutritional intake, including special diets.
  • Follow Anesthesia routine
  • Weigh and record the weight of all GA patients.
  • Enforce NPO and fluid replacement procedures for GA patients as according to ‘pre-operative routines’ protocol and ‘anesthesia routines’ protocol.
  • Personally take report from anesthetist on each general anesthesia patient, and transport back to the ward.
  • Maintain open airways and adequate monitoring of all post-operative general anesthesia patients, using the Acute Care and Anesthetist Records.
  • Maintain IV fluids until patient is wide awake and able to take fluids orally.                             
  • Ensure wards and nursing station are properly cleaned
  • Practice proper infection control
  • Use proper clean and sterile technique.
  • Ensure each newly admitted patient has bathed as necessary.
  • Ensure change of bedding as needed (each new patient or every third day).
  • Assign patient beds so that infectious patients do not contaminate other patients.
  • Control and account for equipment and medications
  • Count all medicines in the nursing cupboard and emergency box, and re-order as necessary.
  • Check function of emergency equipment (e.g. portable oxygen cylinder and portable foot suction).
  • Ensure the safety of all inpatients on the ward
  • Maintain a safe environment for patients.
  • Instruct all patients and attendants in the proper mobility for poorly sighted patients.
  • Three times per week, using return demonstration teaching methods, give public health lessons on the following
    • Vitamin A deficiency and treatment
    • ORS treatment for diarrhea
    • Super Flour treatment for malnutrition
    • Cleanliness in trachoma prevention
  • Attend all in-service lectures and assist in the preparation and presentation of such lectures as requested.
  • Participate in night, Friday, and holiday duty as requested.
  • Every experienced employee is responsible to cooperate and train the subordinate staff, OTTP students and other people that are outside the program and coming for training
  • Assist in the operating room and with other hospital duties as requested.

Consultancy:

  • Guidance patients about what actions they should do or prevent before or after the surgery and during their treatment period.
  • Guide patients and their relative how to use their medication after and before surgery.
  • Guide patients how to keep their eyes clean and what actions they should not do after surgery.
  • Taking agreement letter from the patient and their relative before operation and maintaining them in safe manner.
  • Ability to take care of any potential health issues before surgery of patients, such as high blood pressure, fever, severe cough, and diarrhea and postoperative complications such as bleeding, respiratory problems, severe cough, or problems with digestive and urinary system.
  • Proper follow-up of infection prevention protocols for patients, especially in HIV, HBS, HCV cases.
  • Provide eye health educations for patients and their relative as needed.
  • Satisfaction of patients and their relative for the operations
  • Informing patients of the benefits, concerns and risks of surgery and types of anesthesia
  • Participate in relevant nursing sessions.
  • Determining the discount amount for poor clients.
  • Complete the discount form according NOOR program discount policy.
  • Train other staff or students.

Job Requirements:

  • Successful completion of acceptable nursing program.
  • Punctuality and reliability.

  • Fluency in spoken Dari and Pashto.
  • Basic proficiency in written English.
  • Ability to give clear directions to patients.
  • Carefulness in work.
  • Ability to work well in a team.
  • Excellent oral communication skills.
  • Proficiency in computer use, particularly Microsoft Office programs, with a focus on Excel.
  • Fluency in written and spoken local languages (Dari and Pashto).
  • Good proficiency in the English language.
