Job Descriptions:

Overall Information:
The Nutrition Nurse will be part of the health team in clinics and provide nursing services to most vulnerable people. The primary responsibility of this role is to deliver nutrition services for children under five, children under two, and pregnant and lactating women (PLWs). The nurse will assess the nutritional status of beneficiaries, provide treatment for malnutrition, conduct counseling, and ensure adherence to infection prevention and control measures.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Screening and Assessment:
    • Screen all children under five and PLWs for acute malnutrition.
    • Register and monitor the growth of children under two years, including weight, height, and MUAC measurements.
    • Classify children: Normal, Moderate Acute Malnutrition (MAM), and Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM).
  2. Nutrition and Counseling:
    • Provide individual and group nutrition counseling sessions tailored to the needs of caregivers and clients.
    • Conduct community sensitization and counseling on proper Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) practices and infection prevention.
    • Brief beneficiaries on how to use RUTF, RUSF, and other therapeutic foods, and schedule follow-up visits.
    • Promote the use of iodized salt and administer Vitamin A supplementation as needed.
  3. Treatment and Referrals:
    • Distribute RUTF and RUSF for children diagnosed with SAM and MAM and Super-Cereal for PLWs with acute malnutrition.
    • Refer SAM cases and other complicated cases to doctors for further treatment and follow-up as needed.
    • Provide first aid, triage patients, and manage shock (e.g., open veins, control bleeding).
    • Identify fractures (including neck and spinal injuries), stabilize/immobilize, and provide wound care and dressing.
  4. Psychosocial Support:
    • Assess the psychosocial status of affected individuals, and refer to PSS counselors where necessary.
  5. Documentation and Reporting:
    • Ensure accurate recording of nutrition information in clinic registers and complete weekly and monthly reports.
    • Record daily activities, achievements, success stories/lessons learned, and challenges, and report to the team leader.
  6. Community Engagement:
    • Review and map communities with poor access to health and nutrition services.
    • Follow the community’s awareness to increase access to nutrition and health services.

Job Requirements:

  • Qualified Public Health, Nursing or Midwifery with experience in Nutrition and training activities.
  • 1-2 years of experience in health and nutrition project implementation and design.
  • Expert in community mobilization and coordination to increase community participation.
  • Experienced in designing behavior change communication (health) for improving the nutritional status of the child and childbearing age women.
  • Enthusiasm to travel to locations within a region – and to other regions for training sessions
  • Ability to communicate effectively in local languages both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to speak and write the English language.
  • Good level of literacy and numeracy computer literature
  • Self-motivated possessing persuasion skills ability to maintain relationship and able to work on own initiative.
