Job Purpose:

The Backup Midwife replaces the midwife, vaccinator, and nutrition counselor in the HSC to predominantly deliver RMNCH care, vaccine, and OTP nurse services to women. She assumes responsibility and accountability for their practice, applying up-to-date knowledge and skills in caring for each woman and family. She will work as a member of a mobile health team that includes vaccinators and psychosocial counselors in outreach activities. Support where utilizing facilities as per RMNCH assistant or senior health officer recommendation.

Main Duties & Responsibilities:

• Give the necessary RMNCH care and advice to women during pregnancy, labor, and the postpartum period.
• Manage complications in pregnancy and childbirth, following the principles of basic emergency obstetric care.
• Provide primary care to women of reproductive age, by the BPHS.
• MUAC screening of all pregnant and lactating women and referral of those with MUAC less than 23 cm to the nutrition team for treatment.
• IYCF counseling and education sessions for all pregnant and lactating women
• Provide iron-folic acid supplementation to all pregnant women, Counsel and educate women, their families, and the community, in relevant areas of health, including preparation for parenthood and childbirth.
• Obtain specialized assistance as necessary (consultation or referral).
• Share knowledge, skill, and expertise with medical, midwifery, and nursing students and resident staff, in the management of pregnancy and childbirth, acting as a clinical preceptor.
• Perform limited, select administrative duties such as patient charting, recording, and reporting of data, clinic and/or facility management, or coordination of specific educational or outreach programs.
• Participate in research, professional organizations, related committees, and continuing education opportunities.
• Follow established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives; continuous quality improvement initiative; safety, environmental, and infection prevention standards.
• Participate in the provision of 24-hour, six-day maternity service, which may require evening or night.
• Identify and report immediately any problem that interferes in the delivery of services or in achieving the program objectives to the team leader, and the team leader to his/her immediate supervisor.
• Participate in weekly meetings of health facilities to share information and discuss the program's progress.

As applicable to the position, maintains a clear understanding of International Medical Corps and donor compliance and ethics standards and adheres to those standards.  Conducts work with the highest level of integrity.

Qualifications:

• The candidate must be a midwife, graduated from a recognized midwifery institute.

Experience: 

• The candidate should have 2 years’ experience in BPHS or similar health projects with international or national NGOs.
• Familiarity with HMIS tools of MoH.

Competency: 

• Good knowledge and experience midwifery activities.
• Good knowledge and experience of Health and nutrition training delivery.
• Excellent reputation/well-known Desirable.
• Capacity to perform effectively under pressure and harsh conditions; ability to handle confidential and politically sensitive issues in a responsible and mature manner.
• Excellent capacity development and teamwork skills; cross-cultural and gender sensitivity.
• The candidate will be able to travel hard to reach districts of the target province.
• The candidate will have good human and communication skills.
• The candidate should fluently speak Dari, Ozbaki and English is an asset.
