Job Description - Finance Officer

 

A Finance Officer is the member of an organization’s finance or accounting team responsible for managing financial records, ensuring compliance with financial regulations, and supporting the organization’s financial planning and decision-making.

A Finance Officer oversees and maintains the organization’s financial health by managing budgets, processing transactions, preparing financial reports, and ensuring proper accounting controls are in place. They often serve as a bridge between operational departments and senior management, providing financial insights to support strategic planning.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Management & Reporting

  • Prepare, monitor, and reconcile financial statements (income statements, balance sheets, cash flow statements).
  • Maintain accurate financial records and ledgers.
  • Assist in preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports.
  • Support audits by providing necessary documentation and explanations.

Budgeting & Forecasting

  • Assist in developing annual budgets and financial forecasts.
  • Track expenditures and ensure spending aligns with approved budgets.
  • Provide variance analysis and financial advice to management.

Accounts Payable / Receivable

  • Process invoices, payments, and reimbursements.
  • Manage receivables and ensure timely collection of funds.
  • Maintain relationships with vendors and clients regarding billing and payments.

Compliance & Controls

  • Ensure compliance with financial policies, accounting standards, and relevant legislation.
  • Support tax filings and statutory reporting requirements.
  • Implement and monitor internal controls to prevent fraud or financial mismanagement.

Financial Analysis & Support

  • Analyze financial data to identify trends, risks, and opportunities.
  • Provide input on cost control, resource allocation, and financial performance improvement.
  • Support grant or project financial management (especially in NGOs or public institutions).

 

Job Requirements:

  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles and financial regulations.
  • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Xero, SAP, or Excel).
  • Excellent analytical and numerical skills.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Strong organizational and time management abilities.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills to liaise with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Integrity and discretion when handling confidential financial information.

Education & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Professional certifications (desirable but not always required): CPA, ACCA, CIMA, or equivalent.
  • Prior experience in financial or accounting roles is typically preferred.

Typical Work Environment

  • Works in an office setting (corporate, government agency, nonprofit, or educational institution).
  • Reports to a Finance Manager
  • Collaborates closely with program, operations, and administrative teams.
