Job Purpose

The job purpose of a Community Mobilizer is multidimensional, primarily focusing on fostering community engagement, empowerment, and development. They act as a liaison between the organization they represent and the community, working to build trust, rapport, and partnerships. Their responsibilities include identifying community needs, facilitating discussions, organizing events, and implementing programs aimed at addressing those needs. Additionally, they mobilize resources, both human and material, to support community initiatives and projects. They play a crucial role in advocating for the community's interests and rights, promoting social cohesion, and facilitating participatory decision-making processes and for resolution of field level conflicts between team and communities. Ultimately, their goal is to empower communities to become self-reliant, resilient, and thriving entities.

Responsibilities

  • Developing and maintaining community engagement. Supporting the creation of informal groups/structures. Facilitating community meetings
  • Assist health facilities staff in health education sessions and referral nurse for referring cases.
  • Contributing towards identifying potential community relays 
  • Building and maintaining relationships with the community. Initiating contacts, identifying key players
  • Possible mediation with the various bodies and parties involved, both in the public sector and elsewhere
  • Contributing to community involvement in the design of programmes and activities
  • Contributing to the evaluation of the impact of the activities on the community, improving knowledge, changing practices
  • Gathering information, participating in the study of needs and stakeholder analyses. Conducting field studies
  • Participating in the management of minor supplies and equipment needed for activities.
  • Foster strong relationships with local communities to promote trust and cooperation.
  • Provide information and education on primary healthcare practices to community members.
  • Advocate for improved healthcare services and resources within the community.
  • Conduct assessments to identify the healthcare needs of the community.
  • Organize and facilitate community meetings to discuss healthcare issues and solutions.
  • Develop and implement health promotion campaigns to raise awareness about preventive measures.
  • Establish and manage a referral system to connect community members with healthcare facilities.
  • Train community health workers and volunteers to enhance their skills and knowledge.
  • Mobilize the community during health emergencies and disasters.
  • Develop communication strategies to promote healthy behaviors within the community.
  • Collaborate with other healthcare organizations and government agencies to ensure a coordinated response.
  • Promote gender-sensitive healthcare practices and ensure inclusivity.
  • Respect and incorporate local cultural practices into healthcare programs.
  • Provide regular reports to public health Officer and stakeholders on community mobilization activities and outcomes.
  • Empower community members to take an active role in their own healthcare.
  • Mediate conflicts within the community related to healthcare issues.
  • Develop case studies and success stories. Case studies showcase real-world examples of how mobilizers effectively engaged communities, while success stories highlight the tangible positive outcomes and impacts achieved through their efforts, providing valuable insights and inspiration for future initiatives.
  • Maintain accurate records of community mobilization efforts and healthcare initiatives.
  • Any other task assigned by the supervisor

Job Requirements:

Education: A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field is required. Advanced degrees (Master's level or higher) in social sciences, community development, Humanities, public health, or related fields are preferred.

Experience: At least 2-4 years of professional experience in community mobilization, capacity building, or a closely related field.

Skills required

  • Good communication and presentation skills and public speaking skills. Ability to adapt behavior to the target audience.
  • Understand methods and tools to develop leadership, promote empowerment and strengthen the capacity of a community.
  • Build relationships, negotiate, develop, and maintain networks.
  • Understand the target audience (value systems, codes and practices, medical and medico-social issues, socio-economic and health environment), know how to understand a cultural context, create a bond of trust and how to incorporate that into the action.
  • Being from the target community is considered an advantage for the job Work in a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Be flexible and adaptable; understand and accept changes in the environment regarding people, tasks, work decisions, policies, etc.
