SUMARRY OF JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Poultry Assistant for the ABADEI project will be responsible for providing support in the implementation of poultry-related activities aimed at enhancing the livelihoods of beneficiaries. This role involves assisting in the management of poultry projects, providing technical assistance to poultry farmers, and ensuring the efficient operation of poultry activities under the project.

Key Responsibilities

        1.      Poultry Project Implementation
        •       Assist in the planning, implementation, and monitoring of poultry projects within the ABADEI project, ensuring adherence to project goals and objectives.
        •       Support the establishment and management of poultry farms, including procurement of poultry inputs, construction of poultry housing, and installation of equipment.
        2.      Technical Assistance to Poultry Farmers
        •       Provide technical guidance and support to poultry farmers on best practices in poultry management, including breed selection, feeding, vaccination, disease prevention, and biosecurity measures.
        •       Conduct training sessions and demonstrations for poultry farmers to enhance their knowledge and skills in poultry husbandry and management.
        3.      Poultry Health and Disease Management
        •       Assist in monitoring the health status of poultry flocks and implementing disease prevention and control measures to minimize the risk of disease outbreaks.
        •       Collaborate with veterinary professionals to conduct regular health assessments, diagnose poultry diseases, and administer appropriate treatments as needed.
        4.      Record Keeping and Data Collection
        •       Maintain accurate records of poultry production, including inventory of poultry stock, feed consumption, egg production, mortality rates, and disease incidence.
        •       Collect and compile data on poultry performance indicators to track progress, identify trends, and inform decision-making.
        5.      Farm Management Support
        •       Support poultry farmers in routine farm management tasks, such as feeding, watering, cleaning, and egg collection, to ensure the welfare and productivity of poultry flocks.
        •       Assist in the maintenance and repair of poultry housing, equipment, and facilities to ensure optimal functioning and safety standards.
        6.      Community Engagement and Training
        •       Engage with local communities and stakeholders to promote poultry farming as a sustainable livelihood option and raise awareness about the benefits of poultry production.
        •       Organize and facilitate training workshops, field days, and farmer field schools to build the capacity of poultry farmers and promote knowledge sharing and peer learning.

Job Requirements:

Education: Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science, Veterinary Medicine, Agriculture, or a related field.
Experience: Previous experience in poultry farming, livestock management, or agricultural extension is preferred.
Skills:
        •       Knowledge of poultry husbandry practices, including breeding, feeding, housing, and disease management.
        •       Familiarity with poultry production systems, equipment, and technologies.
        •       Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
        •       Ability to work effectively in rural communities and with smallholder farmers.
        •       Basic computer skills for record keeping and data analysis.
        •       Personal Attributes:
        •       Passion for agriculture and rural development.
        •       Self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
        •       Willingness to travel and work in remote or challenging environments.
        •       Commitment to promoting sustainable and ethical practices in poultry farming. Language: Proficiency in English and fluency in local languages.
