Job Descriptions:

Defining, coordinating, monitoring all midwives and maternity related activities in a project area, according to INTERSOS policies, protocols and standards to provide a high-quality BEmONC care to the population.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Planning, organizing and ensuring the implementation and supervision, in close collaboration with other medical staff, of all Sexual and Reproductive health activities.
  • Informing other medical managers or doctors about any possible serious problem or complication (i.e. worsening of state of patients, problems in medicines, etc.). Coordinating and assessing the feasibility for referral of pregnant women to receive further medical evaluation, to manage efficiently the resources needed for delivering BEmONC care while keeping good quality levels.
  • Assisting and collaborating with the field doctors and nurses when required (normal or complicated deliveries, SV cases, etc.), to complement the existing human resources and contribute to the resolution of complicated cases.
  • Ensuring the new-born babies are followed up correctly since delivery and until discharge and that all pregnant women and newborn children are referred to the Extended Program on Immunization (EPI).
  • Supervising the proper distribution of drugs and use of materials, keeping track of consumption patterns and supply orders, and monitoring inventories, together with the project logistician. Training the midwife and maternity staff in order to ensure having minimum levels of stock to carry out the activities of the project and a rational and appropriate use of material resources
  • In coordination with the project biomedical service supervising the appropriate use of medical devices and anticipating and communicating future needs.

Note: Sexual and Reproductive health activitie SRH Activities include: antenatal and postnatal care, family planning, obstetrical care (BEmONC), neonatal and comprehensive abortion care, management of victims of sexual violence, female genital mutilation, reproductive tract infections and Fistula care. Note: 2. BEmONC = basic emergency obstetric and neonatal care = Administration of antibiotics, oxytocics, anticonvulsants, manual removal of the placenta, removal of retained products following abortion, assisted vaginal delivery, preferably with vacuum extractor and newborn care including neonatal resuscitation.

 

 

Follow up of hospitalised patients

 

  • Managing the midwives and maternity staff in the project.
  • Planning and supervising the associated HR processes (recruitment, training, performance evaluation, motivation, internal/external communication, etc.) in order to improve staff capabilities and to en-sure both the sizing and the amount of knowledge required
  • Ensuring and supervising the implementation of protocols by all staff under his/her responsibility in order to improve the quality of the healthcare given to population and to prevent any infection due to staff malpractices

 

Training of hospital staff

 

  • Detect need for further training of any medical staff (e.g. medical pro-cedures, resuscitation etc.), communicate this to supervisor, partici-pate in planning and execution of training.

 

Monitoring and reporting

 

  • Supervising administrative procedures and documents, analysing rou-tine data for monitoring purposes, and being responsible for the col-lection and analysis of medical statistics and reporting of SRH activi-ties (participation in epidemiological reports and monthly reports ac-cording to guidelines) in order to have updated and correct infor-mation about the day-to-day activity in the project and to provide support in the decision-making
  • Participating in the definition and update of annual project planning and budget, and if needed, in any emergency activity or exploratory visit in or out of the project area.

Job Requirements:

  • University degree in midwifery.
  • Minimum 2 years relevant work experience as midwife in the humanitarian sector
  • Experience with monitoring tools and systems in the health and nutrition sectors
  • Proficiency in English, Pashto and Dari languages is highly essential.
  • Essential computer literacy (word, excel and internet)
  • Commitment to INTERSOS principles.
  • Comply with all relevant INTERSOS policies and procedures.
  • Understanding of humanitarian operations principles, standards and best practices
  • Prior experience in Southern Afghanistan (Kandahar, Helmand, Zabul, Uruzgan)
  • Good report writing and proposal writing skills are desirable
  • Experience in trainings and capacity building / development of staff is desirable
  • Ability and willingness to travel and stay overnight at service delivery point.
