About Islamic Relief Worldwide- Afghanistan

Islamic Relief Worldwide (IRW) is an international, non-profitable, non-governmental humanitarian relief organization with its head quarter in Birmingham, UK. Job Description

The Health and Nutrition Division is committed to improving the health and well-being of vulnerable communities by delivering accessible, high-quality, and integrated primary healthcare and nutrition services. The division focuses on disease prevention, health promotion, diagnosis, treatment, maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH), nutrition, and emergency healthcare in accordance with the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) guidelines, organizational policies, and humanitarian standards. Through effective clinical service delivery, community engagement, and coordinated health interventions, the division aims to reduce morbidity and mortality, strengthen health systems, and improve health outcomes for women, children, and other vulnerable populations.

The Medical Doctor is responsible for providing high-quality, patient-centred curative, preventive, and promotive healthcare services in accordance with Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) guidelines, organizational policies, and humanitarian standards. The Medical Doctor conducts clinical consultations, diagnoses and treats common illnesses and injuries, manages medical emergencies, and provides appropriate referrals when required. The role supports maternal, newborn, and child health (MNCH), nutrition, and public health interventions, ensuring the delivery of integrated primary healthcare services to vulnerable communities.

The Medical Doctor supervises and supports clinical staff, promotes adherence to clinical protocols and infection prevention and control (IPC) standards, ensures accurate medical documentation and HMIS reporting, and contributes to quality improvement initiatives. The position also participates in community health promotion, disease surveillance, outbreak response, and coordination with relevant stakeholders to improve access to quality healthcare services and achieve project objectives.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive outpatient consultation, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care for patients in accordance with Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) guidelines, BPHS protocols, and organizational policies.

  • Assess, diagnose, and manage acute and chronic medical conditions using evidence-based clinical practices.

  • Prescribe medicines rationally and ensure the safe and effective use of pharmaceuticals in accordance with national treatment guidelines.

  • Identify and manage medical emergencies, provide life-saving interventions, and arrange timely referrals for cases requiring higher-level care.

  • Deliver integrated primary healthcare services, including maternal, newborn, and child health (MNCH), adolescent health, and care for the elderly.

  • Conduct antenatal (ANC) and postnatal (PNC) consultations where applicable and support the management of pregnancy-related complications within the scope of the facility.

  • Screen, diagnose, and manage common communicable and non-communicable diseases and ensure appropriate referral when necessary.

  • Screen children under five years of age for acute malnutrition and refer or manage cases according to the Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (IMAM) guidelines.

  • Collaborate with Midwives, Nurses, Pharmacists, Nutrition Counsellors, and Community Health Workers to provide integrated and patient-centred care.

  • Ensure accurate medical records, patient registration, prescriptions, referral forms, and HMIS documentation are completed in a timely manner.

  • Participate in disease surveillance, outbreak detection, reporting, and emergency response activities.

  • Promote infection prevention and control (IPC) standards and ensure compliance with clinical protocols and patient safety measures.

  • Provide health education and counselling to patients and caregivers on disease prevention, nutrition, hygiene, family planning, immunization, and healthy lifestyles.

  • Supervise and mentor clinical staff, providing technical guidance and on-the-job training to improve the quality of healthcare services.

  • Participate in supportive supervision, clinical audits, mortality and morbidity reviews, and quality improvement initiatives.

  • Ensure the proper use and rational management of medicines, medical equipment, and clinical supplies.

  • Coordinate with the Health and Nutrition Officer, Health Facility In-Charge, and other stakeholders to ensure effective implementation of project activities.

  • Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly clinical reports and contribute to donor and programme reporting as required.

  • Maintain patient confidentiality and uphold professional ethics, safeguarding principles, and humanitarian standards at all times.

  • Participate in community outreach activities, health promotion campaigns, and awareness sessions to improve community health.

  • Perform any other duties assigned by the Health and Nutrition Officer, Health Coordinator, or Project Manager that are relevant to the position.

  • Valid license to practice medicine issued by the relevant national authority and successful completion of the National Exit Examination.

  • Experience in disease surveillance, outbreak preparedness, and emergency health response is an advantage.
